DEPARTMENT OF ANCIENT AND MODERN EUROPEAN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER IN GERMAN (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Supervising postgraduate dissertations;
  • Conducting research at a nationally competitive level;
  • Organising undergraduate modules as required;
  • Academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participating in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching and learning, research and community engagement.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Lecturer:

  • A master’s degree in German and concrete evidence of having registered for a PhD (which is near or close to completion);
  • Appropriate teaching experience in the applicable field of expertise;
  • Basic supervision skills;
  • Research outputs appropriate to the post level and/or applicable field of expertise.
  • Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):
  • A doctoral degree in German or a related/applicable discipline.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

 

  • Native or near-native mastery of the German language;
  • Knowledge of German linguistics;
  • Didactics of German as a Foreign language;
  • Knowledge of the background of the German-speaking countries and their cultural practices;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills in English.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Lecturer:

  • A doctoral degree in German or a related/applicable discipline.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
