This vacancy is relevant to the theory and practice of agronomic production systems and is ideally suited to a candidate with a background in these fields or related plant oriented fields of teaching and research. The position is part of the N-GAP initiative of the DHET. The appointee will become part of a dynamic teaching corps. Training and research in the Department of Agronomy is aimed at providing for the increasing requirements for food, fuel and fibre in an overpopulated world that must cope with the challenge of climate change.  There is a serious shortage of agronomists and with the increasing challenges the demand will undoubtedly increase.

 

Duties

  • Duties will be assigned in accordance with the phasing-in requirements of the nGAP initiative;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Agronomy, with specific reference to indigenous knowledge systems;
  • Developing and evaluating course material in indigenous knowledge systems;
  • Providing academic guidance to postgraduate students;
  • Continuously publishing research results in accredited, peer-reviewed journals, as well as the presentation of conference papers;
  • Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;
  • Rendering a service to the research environment, Department, Faculty and University, as well as relevant industries.

 

Job Requirements

  • MSc, MScAgric or PhD in Agronomy or relevant plant-oriented qualification commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • An ability or willingness of proven experience of teaching (in agronomy or other relevant plant-oriented fields) to participate in an active teaching programme in agronomy;
  • Ability and proficiency to obtain external research funding commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • Peer reviewed scientific publications commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • Postgraduate student supervision commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • Ability to work in teams;
  • Ability to operate in interdisciplinary teams.

 

Recommendation

  • Enrolled PhD student with proof of progress;
  • Sound interpersonal skills;
  • Organising ability;
  • Ability to draw external funding for projects;
  • Relevant computer proficiency;
  • Relevant proficiency in statistics;
  • Language proficiency in English, also preferably in Afrikaans and/or a third South African language.
