Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have a background in technologies relevant to the construction of Decision Support Systems and other Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

You will work on projects relating to research being conducted in the AI Theme of the School of Computing. A major part of the work, at least initially, will be to continue the work started in the EPSRC funded “Assessing the Underworld” project (ATU). This project focussed on detecting the condition of buried assets, and in particular building a decision support system (DSS) to assist those concerned with maintaining streets and the assets buried underneath them, based on sensor data, deterioration models, geological data, and other information. You will work collaboratively to extend the existing prototype decision support system, focussing on the higher level aspects, particularly those relating to databases, ontologies and reasoning. This will include sourcing and transforming data from external sources as input to the DSS, and building a web based user interface to the DSS. There may also be the opportunity to work on methods for interpreting sensor data relating to underground assets, such as vibro acoustics, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and other electro-magnetic sensors, but this will be secondary to your work on the DSS. The other duties of the job will depend on which other projects require support during the tenure of the position, but the applicant is expected to have demonstrated an excellent ability to pick up unfamiliar technologies very quickly, to be able to generate their own original ideas, and to transform ideas into working prototypes quickly.Travel within the UK will be required to visit project partners and for project meetings, and further afield as necessary for presentation of published papers in conferences. You will be expected to publish your research in conferences and journals and to write deliverables for projects. You will have a PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline along with extensive previous experience in a wide range of related areas, including computer vision, machine learning, knowledge representation and reasoning (including ontology development and use), web development, and data fusion.
