The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is finalising a research study on HIV prevention. The goal of this study is to reduce the number of new HIV infections within targeted geographical areas by providing an HIV prevention package that will be distributed by community workers and that will include the early initiation of antiretrovirals.

 

To meet this goal, the DTTC is looking to fill the following position:

 

Job purpose

The successful candidate will work in the households of cohort participants in close collaboration with the cohort study coordinator and the survey enumerators. The successful candidate will be instrumental in completing activities scheduled in the PopART research protocol and implementing standard operating procedures.

 

Job Requirements

  • Work closely with the project manager and the population cohort coordinator and interact with other members of the DTTC management to fulfil the evaluation goals.
  • Travel to study sites all over Cape Town and/or the Winelands District.
  • Interact with health facility staff.
  • Interact with community members (research participants in households) to perform in-house phlebotomies.
  • Undertake HIV counselling and testing in households.
  • Undertake assessments for various conditions pending assessment findings and refer accordingly.
  • Perform clinical nursing procedures related to the PopART study.
  • Undertake quality checks on information collected by survey enumerators.
  • Communicate and collect data on work done.
  • Perform all duties within the context of the mission, vision and value statement of Stellenbosch University.

 

Job Purpose

  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse.
  • Willingness to conduct household visits.
  • Research experience in HIV management or prevention.
  • At least two years’ applicable experience.
  • Experience in leading a research team.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and effectively.
  • Goal-oriented disposition.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word and Excel).
  • Sound interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in challenging circumstances.
  • Valid driver’s licence and own transport.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid good clinical practice certificate.
  • Ability to speak and write in English.

 

Recommendation

  • Experience in facilitating training and conducting research.
  • Ability to speak Xhosa, Afrikaans or both.
