SENIOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANT
PEROMNES POST LEVEL 10

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Managing cellular and molecular biology-related laboratories;
- Teaching research techniques to postgraduate students;
- Research support, planning and execution of experiments in conjunction with project leaders;
- Collecting and processing research data;
- Preparing and presenting practical classes;
- Marking assignments/worksheets/practical tests;
- Processing student marks;
- Providing general administrative and finance system support in the Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A BSc Honours degree in Physiology;
- Three years’ research experience as a Technical/Laboratory Assistant with exposure to a variety of laboratory techniques relating to physiology, biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology;
- Three years’ teaching experience and the processing of student marks;
- Three years’ previous experience in laboratory maintenance.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), e-mail, internet, reference management programmes, e.g. Endnote, and statistical analysis programmes;
- Appropriate language and communication skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- MSc degree in Physiology;
- One year previous experience in laboratory management.
The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 335 705 to R 421 884 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
