DIRECTOR: LAW CLINIC

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Providing legal representation to indigent persons;
  • Teaching and student supervision;
  • Training and supervising candidate attorneys;
  • Office administration and managing litigation matters;
  • Performing fundraising for the Law Clinic;
  • Actively participating in legal clinical education focused on core legal skills;
  • Playing an oversight role for general clinical work;
  • Developing new project opportunities for the Law Clinic;
  • Performing any other administrative tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the Dean of Law.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • LLM-degree with outstanding academic credentials;
  • At least seven years’ post admission experience;
  • Admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa;
  • Extensive experience as clinician at a Law Clinic;
  • Significant litigation experience in both civil and criminal matters;
  • Membership and in good standing with the Law Society.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Sound judgment and exceptional ethical standards;
  • Excellence in teaching and student supervision;
  • Strong organisational and team work skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 817 161 to R 960 491 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
