Job Details
This position represents one of at least 20 new research and other staff who will work together with the existing investigators to build on the exciting progress already made in the field of cancer immunology.
The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober who are relocating their research group from the USA to Southampton. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of novel antibody-based therapeutics that in the past has led to several therapeutics that are currently in advanced clinical trials. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.
You will be highly motivated and excited by the challenges involved in managing and supporting a dynamic, interdisciplinary group of researchers and be responsible for health and safety, ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures. You will oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, manage and oversee biosafety and other regulatory processes.
Relevant skills for managing a large budget, equipment purchases/maintenance and laboratory supplies are essential.
You will be responsible for organising and archiving of scientific data acquired in the laboratory. You will also have a significant impact on the scientific mission of the laboratory by carrying out and supervising experiments and playing a major role in the generation of data and the writing of scientific manuscripts e.g. progress reports for granting agencies. Introduction of novel experimental approaches into the laboratory is an important aspect of the position.
You will be an efficient and capable manager with skills to oversee a laboratory of members with different scientific and educational backgrounds. You will manage junior laboratory members and take responsibility for training new laboratory members. The position requires significant, independent interactions with stakeholders within and outside the university.
While direct experience of the role described in the job description is not a prerequisite, scientific knowledge in a biological field equivalent to Ph.D. level is required. The post-holder will possess relevant academic qualifications and work experience as well as good IT skills. The role requires the ability to work independently, plan and organize your own workload, work well under pressure and communicate effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders within and outside the organisation.
In the early years of the appointment, the management of the transition of the laboratory from the US will be a major focus for the Laboratory Manager.
Interviews will be held during week commencing 2nd July 2018.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor E. Sally Ward, e.sally.ward@gmail.com or Professor Raimund J. Ober, raimund.ober@gmail.com.
