Duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain world class teaching and research development in Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education.
  • Maintain high levels of involvement in research, study guidance and supervision for postgraduate students.
  • Get involved in curriculum development in the field of Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education.
  • Co-operate with the UFS Schools Partnership Project (SPP) in the establishment of an innovative model for Natural Sciences/Life Sciences teacher education through an intensive internship training model.
  • Manage and teach undergraduate and postgraduate Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education.
  • Assist in the maintenance and running of the Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education laboratories and other facilities.
  • Produce research outputs of a high quality.
  • Obtain external sources of research funding.
  • Assist with the mentoring of junior staff within the School.

    Inherent requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication, ideally in an accredited journal.
  • A good academic record.
  •  

    Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to function well in the university’s richly diverse working environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Intermediate computer skills in MS Word and PowerPoint.
  •  

    Recommendations

  • A doctoral degree in Natural Sciences/Life Sciences Education.
  • Ability to teach Mathematics Education at undergraduate level will be an added advantage.
  • Proven research record of relevant publications in national and/or international accredited journals.
  • Specialisation and/or experience in quantitative research.
  • Knowledge of assessment and alternative assessment practices and willingness to attend training sessions in this regard.
  • Teaching experience in school context, a higher education environment or in Teaching Education.
  • Experience in community engagement.
  • Experience in postgraduate supervision.
