Job Purpose

The post holder is part of a technical team who will provide core support for the Teaching Laboratories Manager in delivering the College of Medical & Dental Sciences practical teaching commitments.

The post holder being primarily responsible for the day-to-day setup and preparation of materials required within the teaching laboratories. The post involves significant preparation of undergraduate class materials (reagents & equipment), the post holder will be expected to help and assist students during practical sessions.

The post holder would be expected to operate outside of normal university hours during term time due to the timetable driven nature of the post and be expected to ensure that local and University Health & Safety policies are enforced within the laboratories.

 

Person Specification

  • The post holder should ideally be qualified to at least ONC or equivalent and / or will have at least 3-4 years relevant laboratory experience in order to be fully effective
  • A well-developed working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice, Good Microbiological Practice, aseptic technique and other relevant skills will be essential
  • Ideally having working experience in supporting a laboratory based teaching environment
  • To be able to demonstrate an effective capability to participate during undergraduate practicals
  • Experience of life sciences/microbiology/pharmaceutical sciences or chemistry would be advantageous
  • A proven dependability and reliability is essential
  • To be proactive in all matters relating to Health & Safety
  • Good communication skills are essential to be able to interact with students
  • To have the required personal skills to act as a role model during sessions
  • Having good organisational skills and the flexibility to meet deadlines dictated by the timetable dependent nature of laboratory practical teaching
  • The post-holder will be fully familiar with the safe handling and storage of all laboratory materials
  • Be able to fully communicate with a wide range of staff members; academic, technical and administrative
  • Good IT skills, having a familiarity with both Windows and Apple Macintosh OS will be advantageous

 

Salary

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £19,156 to £20,514. With potential progression once in post to £25,009 a year.
