Sustainable Minerals Institute - The Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC)

The Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC) is a world-renowned research and postgraduate education organisation, located at Indooroopilly in Brisbane, approximately 7 km from the main University of Queensland campus in St Lucia. JKMRC was established in 1970, and now forms part of the UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI).

The mission of the SMI-JKMRC is to deliver world-class, customer-focussed education, research and technical services to the world minerals industry and allied sectors. The SMI-JKMRC has an international reputation for applied research in the areas of mineral processing and geometallurgy. It specialises in ore characterisation, mineral processing unit operations such as comminution and flotation, applied mineralogy, and the interface between mining and processing. Its emphasis on systems analysis by mathematical modelling and process simulations has led to major new methodologies in the design and optimisation of mineral processing operations. It works closely with the international minerals industry and with other research providers in Australia and overseas. It has graduated in excess of 200 Masters and PhD students and won many awards for its research. It has a proven record of technology transfer through JKTech, which has significant experience in the commercial delivery of SMI-JKMRC research outcomes, particularly in simulation software and ore characterisation methodologies. Further information about SMI-JKMRC can be found at http://www.jkmrc.uq.edu.au

The person

The successful applicant will be an outstanding and enthusiastic mineral science or engineering graduate in possession of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum honours class IIB or equivalent.

Please view the minimum level of academic achievement for admission to the Master of Philosophy on the UQ Graduate School Research Degree page (http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/our-research-degrees).  Applicants must have an academic background in a field or discipline relevant to the area of mineral processing and ideally experience in mineral concentration through froth flotation, with a proven capability of carrying out practical research.  Applicants should have the ability to work autonomously and show initiative while also building a good rapport with site personnel from a range of disciplines.  Strong analytical skills and familiarity with mass balancing software, Matlab and Microsoft Excel are also highly desirable.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and offers flexible working arrangements. Applications are particularly encouraged from women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The role

SMI-JKMRC, in partnership with the CSIRO, has been awarded an ACARP grant with the objective of developing and testing a model informed process control system for coal flotation.  CSIRO have developed an InterfloatTM sensor capable of accurately determining the height of a flotation froth above a launder lip, as well as information about the froth structure.  This information coupled with a camera has the potential to estimate yield from a flotation cell.  CSIRO have partnered with SMI-JKMRC to test this device and determine whether it can be combined with flotation froth modelling algorithms to develop a model informed process control system to optimise coal yield and selectivity.  Experimental work for this project will be conducted at Anglo’s Moranbah North mine and involve testwork on a Jameson cell.  A Master student is being sought to assist with this research project with the project due to commence in October 2018.  The Masters project working title is “Development of a model informed process control strategy for coal”.  The student would need to commence in either October 2018 or January, 2019.

PhD Admission and Scholarship

Applicants must have an academic background in a field or discipline relevant to the area of mineral processing and ideally experience in mineral concentration through froth flotation, with a proven capability of carrying out practical research.  Applicants should have the ability to work autonomously and show initiative while also building a good rapport with site personnel from a range of disciplines. Strong analytical skills and familiarity with mass balancing software, Matlab and Microsoft Excel are also highly desirable.

Applicants must note that applying to this posting does not guarantee admission to UQ in the RHD program. The applicant who is selected to participate in the Project will be invited to apply to the UQ Graduate School for admission to UQ. Participation in the Project and award of a scholarship is conditional on the applicant receiving an offer of admission from UQ Graduate School. The SMI Research Higher Degree Office will guide the successful application through the admission application process.

The selected applicant should be prepared to commence masters candidature in Brisbane, Australia within the first two weeks of Research Quarter 4 (October) 2018 or Research Quarter 1 (January) 2019.

How to Apply

To submit an application please visit the Graduate School How to Apply page at https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/future-students/applying-research-higher-degree. This online application is for both admission and scholarship.

When completing the online application form, applicants must indicate that they are applying for the SMI-JKMRC ACARP Process Control Scholarship in the scholarship section.
