Job Details
The aim of this project is to develop new image-based methods for analysing the properties of ceramic interfaces under dynamic loading. This will be based on techniques developed by the PhotoDyn research team (http://photodyn.org/) using ultra-high speed imaging (> 1 Million fps). The project will include a significant experimental component using state-of-the-art imaging and impact facilities commissioned for the PhotoDyn research group. A combined approach of simulation and experiments will be used to adapt existing methods to the specific challenges associated with testing bi-material interfaces. During this project the candidate will receive extensive training in full-field displacement measurement techniques; high strain rate impact testing methods and ultra-high speed imaging.
The ideal candidate for this project will have a bachelor degree in mechanical, materials or civil engineering and have studied solid mechanics at undergraduate level. Prior experience with finite element simulations is desirable but not essential. Due to funding restrictions candidates must be UK/EU nationals.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. Lloyd Fletcher, Engineering Materials research group, Email: l.c.fletcher@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 6626.
