Job Purpose

The post-holder will lead and develop the participation of young people in the Institute for Mental Health (IMH) and will be responsible for implementing the Institute’s participation action plan and framework. This role requires the post-holder to build and maintain excellent relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters where necessary, and they should be committed to equal opportunities. Ideally the successful candidate will have lived experience of mental ill-health.

The post-holder will develop, support and facilitate various methods for involving young people in the work of IMH so that their participation shapes the activities of IMH. This will be achieved in partnership with young people and will also draw on good practice in involving people in research.

Key elements of this role will include:

  • Ensuring young people with experience of mental ill-health have meaningful and rewarding involvement in the work of the IMH
  • Co-designing and co-producing communication, events, collaborations and other activities to promote young people’s participation, with special emphasis on improving understanding of mental health research
  • Developing an effective infrastructure to support young people to be actively involved in the work of IMH
  • Working collaboratively with Forward Thinking Birmingham and other groups involved in youth participation to promote opportunities and share learning
  • Supporting communication and promoting awareness of projects being undertaken by research initiatives within and outside the IMH to improve young people’s participation in research

 

The post holder will work collaboratively and provide essential liaison to support the active participation of children, young people and young adults and parents/carers. The role will involve liaison with the IMH Director, and will report directly to the IMH Business Manager. The post-holder will deal with people at all levels of University staff and external affiliates of the IMH.

 

Person Specification

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience:

Essential

  • Degree-level education or equivalent work experience
  • Experience of engagement and involvement of service users, communities, and the public
  • Interest in research
  • A proven, high standard of written and oral communication, and confidence of leading projects at all levels
  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills with a proven ability to pay attention to detail
  • A creative and innovative approach to problem solving
  • Computer literate, confident and competent in the use of database systems and electronic communication
  • Confidence in using social media for professional purposes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Energetic and enthusiastic approach with an ability to bring people together to work on a common cause
  • Ability to work with initiative, and being able to lead on and prioritise work in a pressured environment
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • A team player but someone who can work independently
  • Prepared to undertake occasional work in the evenings and weekends with some nights spent away from home

 

Preferred

  • Lived experience of mental ill health

 

Planning and organising:

  • The post-holder would be expected to solve most day to day administrative queries without reference to others; and support future planning as necessary
  • Experience of managing events
  • A proven, high standard of written and oral communication, and confidence of leading projects at all levels
  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills with a proven ability to pay attention to detail
  • A creative and innovative approach to problem solving

 

Renumeration

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £26,495 to £28,936. With potential progression once in post to £32,548 a year.
