Job Details

Research Fellow Salary: £29,799 - £30,688 per annum

Research Technician Salary: £24,285 - £27,285 perannum

You are invited to apply for a position to work in Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton in the Chromosome Biology Laboratory. The post offered will either be a Research Technician or a Research Fellow, dependent on qualifications and experience. This Wellcome Trust-funded position offers excellent career development opportunities. There is an expectation that this project will develop into a larger programme.

A prospective postdoctoral research fellow would assume leadership on the project, including significant intellectual contribution, setting up collaborations and involvement in making decisions about current and future research directions.

A research technician would actively participate in generating a critically-important body of data that would form a pillar for the further growth of this study into a longer-term research agenda.

Our goal is to dissect mechanisms underlying the roles protein phosphatases play in regulating the processes of cell division and proper chromosome segregation. Initially, utilising the genome editing strategy, you are going to create cell lines that will enable us to deplete phosphatases of our choice with a high temporal precision. This, combined with an extensive imaging studies and targeted proteomics, will directly address questions about the new functions of these enzymes in cell division. We expect that this work will provide novel and top quality data, which will become grounds for investigating mitotic roles of individual protein phosphatases, but also open a new strategy to explore the cell cycle-specific function of other major regulatory proteins in human cells. Along with standard molecular cell biology methods, you are going to use CRISPR/Cas9 technology, live imaging and advanced proteomics during this project. This project brings a great potential for publishing high impact papers, preparing grant proposals and forging new collaborations.

We are looking for an ambitious person, who is excited about exploring yet unknown mechanisms behind the regulation of chromosome segregation. A highly collaborative atmosphere supported by the state-of-the-art research facilities will provide a perfect environment in which to perform this study. An ideal person will possess knowledge and skills that would allow him/her to carry out laboratory-based research with minimal direct supervision. You will be fully-focused to reach the objectives of the project and participate in other research-oriented activities within the lab and department. For the Research Fellow position, you will need to hold a PhD in a relevant subject area. Previous experience of working in a life-sciences laboratory is essential.

This post is available immediately, for an initial period of 24 months. Please see the two different job descriptions attached for further information on each role. Please indicate which role you wish to be considered for in your application.
