Director: Employment Relations Management (post level 5) (contract appointment: 5 years)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinate, advise on and regulate employment relations management.
  • Keep abreast of labour legislation and advise management on appropriate actions to implement and manage changes in legislation.
  • Act as advisor for the Employment Equity Committee with reference to labour matters.
  • Monitor the employee relations climate on the campus and advise management in this regard.
  • Manage operational employment relations.
  • Act as facilitator during grievance and disciplinary hearings to monitor procedural fairness, substantive fairness and consistency with regard to determining corrective actions.
  • Work closely with unions with regard to employee matters and act as mediator between management and the unions.
  • Maintain collective agreements with the unions.
  • Represent management during dispute resolution procedures (e.g. CCMA).
  •  

    Inherent requirements:

  • Honours’ degree or equivalent qualification in Law or a related discipline.
  • Eight (8) years extensive appropriate experience in employment relations as described in the above-mentioned duties, of which three (3) years should be in a managerial capacity.
  • Senior experience in dealing with employment relations matters representing at the CCMA and the Labour Court.

    • A good understanding of the management of change, diversity and perceptions.
    • Good human relations, interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a service orientation.
    • Business acumen.

    • Building coalitions

     

    Recommendations:

    • A combination of work experience in both the higher education and private sectors.
    • Experience in other Human Resources disciplines.

     

    Term of office: 

    Five (5) years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term. 

    Assumption of duties:

    As soon as possible.
