Job Details

University of Southampton

Waterfront Campus, National Oceanography Centre Southampton

Ocean and Earth Science, Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences

The University of Southampton seeks an exceptional candidate for its highly prestigious Regius Professorship of Ocean Sciences to be based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

We seek an accomplished individual with a track record that demonstrates established or emerging world-leading stature in their field. Candidates will not necessarily already hold a full professorship.

We welcome applications across the spectrum of the ocean sciences, although scientists whose primary interests relate to marine biological sciences or the physics of the ocean-atmosphere system are particularly encouraged.

The Regius Professorship of Ocean Sciences is unique. It was bestowed to the University of Southampton by Her Majesty The Queen to mark her 90th birthday, in recognition of the University’s international leadership in ocean science and the maritime economy.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable high personal scientific standing with an outstanding track record of publishing in leading international journals; evidence of attracting significant research funding; research leadership leading to impact of this work in societal, industrial and/or policy matters; and the ability and readiness to take advantage of the multi-disciplinary research opportunities offered by the University and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

Ranked in the top one percent of global universities, Southampton is a leading international university. Ocean and Earth Science is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) on the University’s Waterfront Campus alongside our Natural Environment Research Council, NERC-NOC colleagues. Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton is the UK’s top marine science programme and among the top few programmes in earth and environmental science by every measure (REF 2014). Forged through partnership between the University of Southampton and NERC, and housed in a large purpose-built structure, NOCS is among the largest and most successful marine science institutions in the world.  It brings together, under one roof, over 500 researchers and support staff drawn from physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience and engineering.

Southampton offers a research and teaching environment in Ocean and Earth Science with real critical mass. The Graduate School of National Oceanography Centre Southampton numbers over 200 PhD students and we graduate over 250 undergraduate and masters students every year. Together with our Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamicsthe Institute for Life Sciences and our Institute for Maritime Law, this makes Southampton world-leading in the marine and maritime sector across both the physical and biological sciences.
