Research Fellow

Job Details

Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work within the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham.

The successful candidate will work on a 3-year project funded within an ERC Consolidator Grant to investigate the role of brain oscillations for human episodic memory (lab of Dr Simon Hanslmayr). The methodological focus of the project is on intracranial single-unit recordings in human epilepsy patients and computational modelling of oscillations in memory networks.

The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in all stages of designing and conducting experiments, analysing electrophysiological data, computational modelling.

The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to prepare the results for academic publication, to present at national and international academic conferences, and to engage in public activities.

  • MA, MSc or similar in Cognitive Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, or closely related field.
  • PhD in an area related to brain oscillations, or human memory and cognitive neuroscience; PhD finished or at least thesis submitted by starting date of post;
  • High level of computational skills and signal analysis toolboxes (i.e. Matlab).
  • Expertise in, or willing to learn, computational modelling involving realistic spiking neural network models.
  • High level of understanding of brain oscillations and their role for memory.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly (including proficiency in English language).
  • Eager to work in a clinical environment, to closely interact with epilepsy patients and to be flexible in terms of time (i.e. testing patients at night, or on weekends).
  • Experience with designing cognitive memory experiments.
  • Extensive experience with experimental design and statistical analysis.
  • Programming skills (MATLAB, Python etc.) and experience with programming psychological experiments (using Presentation, Psychotoolbox, PsychoPy etc.).
  • Good academic writing and presentation skills; ideally academic publication record.
