Job Details

The University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland, with about 13'000 students and 4'300 researchers in 7 faculties covering a wide spectrum of disciplines from humanities to natural sciences. sciCORE is the center for scientific computing at the University of Basel, and is also a node in a national infrastructure network coordinated by the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. We support scientists on matters of data management, analysis and storage by providing efficient high-performance computing as well as consulting and training.

To consolidate our research support activities in the domain of biostatistics and genomics data analysis, we are now looking for an experienced bioinformatician/biostatistician. The institutes we currently support are primarily the University of Basel (the Biozentrum and life sciences faculties) and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health institute (SwissTPH), with applications in Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. Demand for bioinformatics and biostatistics support from university hospitals is also growing, in particular we anticipate collaborations in the context of the Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN)

The position is available immediately. The contract will initially be limited to a period of three years with the possibility of an extension.

Your position

Our successful candidate will collaborate with local research teams in providing advice on experimental design, acting as consultant in data analysis strategies and/or actually conducting analyses and reporting results for specific projects. Hands-on data analysis is expected to be predominantly in relation to high-throughput *omics data and potentially image analysis and structural biology.

In the position, our collaborator will work largely independently, yet will operate in the network of bioinformatics research groups active at the Biozentrum, in the Basel area and at the Swiss level via the dual affiliation with SIB. Ideally, our candidate would also be interested in teaching advanced data analysis techniques to post-graduate biology

students and researchers.

Your profile

Our ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • PhD and Post-doc experience in statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics or equivalent
  • Strong prior experience in *omics data analysis
  • Fluent in R/Bioconductor, Python, Linux/UNIX, ideally with some experience in cluster computing
  • Ability to critically review statistical methodologies and algorithms
  • Ability to follow several projects in parallel
  • Taste for collaboration with wet-lab scientists and for knowledge transfer with fellow data analysts
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (German would be an asset)

We offer you

We offer a key position in a highly interdisciplinary and inspiring academic work environment. sciCORE commits to a very user-oriented, flexible service supporting all domains of research requiring high-performance computational resources, from physics to life sciences. You will work with domain-specialists and advance your skills in bioinformatics and cutting-edge scientific computing.
