Brunel Design is seeking to appoint a dynamic and passionate academic with expertise and vision in Human Factors (as it relates to design practice), to contribute to teaching and research within the department.

This position will require candidates to possess broad expertise in Human Factors for Design pertaining to the scientific knowledge about humans including ergonomics, anthropometrics,  biomechanics, sensory perception, user experience design and human-centred design, together with high level understanding of innovative product development process.

Brunel Design has an outstanding reputation for design education and research both nationally and internationally. It offers six design programmes at Undergraduate and Masters levels, which are built on a broad interdisciplinary and industry relevant platform of creative design skills, technical knowledge and practical experience fostered through extensive industry collaborations. The quality of these programmes is reflected in excellent educational ratings and high graduate employability. Brunel Design has recently moved into new facilities and offers staff and students a modern and vibrant teaching environment, combined with extensive digital design and prototyping facilities.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering or similar, and a PhD qualification directly relevant to the teaching programmes and research activities of Brunel Design, be able to evidence expertise and experience in human factors/human-centred design, and have an established research profile in a related area.

The appointee will contribute significantly to the teaching of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a view to assuming a programme directorship or other senior departmental role. The role will require expertise, skills, knowledge and understanding in Human Factors and Human Centred Design , combined with significant teaching experience, and applicants must be able to articulate a clear vision for achieving excellence in teaching and curriculum development.

Research in Brunel Design is organised in three thematic priorities:

  • Human Centred Design(Inclusive Design, Perception Enhancement and the Human Centred Design (HCDI),
  • Design for Sustainability (Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Cleaner Electronics and Advanced Materials and Manufacture),
  • Design for Innovation (including Design Management, Open Design, Digital Design and Digital Production, and Research Knowledge Transfer)

 

It is expected that the successful appointee will have the potential to contribute high quality research that enhances activities in at least one of the above departmental research areas, through journal publication, research income generation and engagement with stakeholders.

An essential consideration for the appointment is good teaching and curriculum development skills, and the ability to nurture design students and provide them with a high quality learning experience.

In addition, you will have empathy for interdisciplinary working, and will be expected to work creatively across the subject area, taking an integrated approach to design teaching. Candidates must be self-motivated, with good interpersonal and relationship-building skills and a passion for design education.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the teaching and research environment of Brunel Design, and assume a leading role in industry and community engagement activities, such as Made in Brunel.
