Higher Education Development Practitioner: Learning Technologies (Lecturer at CHERTL)

Academic, Eastern Cape Grahamstown

R 530 140 Annually

The Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Learning at Rhodes University has developed a national reputation in the field of academic staff development. Its well-theorised and innovative approaches to formal higher education studies and short courses are highly regarded and its research output provides a significant contribution to the sector.

CHERTL is seeking to recruit a specialist in learning technologies in higher education to contribute to the exciting work we do.

The main roles of the Higher Education Development Practitioner specialising in learning technologies will be to develop the capacity of academics to use learning technologies effectively in their roles as educators. The support and development are provided by working with academics in consultations, workshops, short courses and in formal programmes intended to enhance their capacity to teach with technologies.

In addition, the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the development of the field of Higher Education Studies through their own research and by providing supervision at (at least) master’s level.

Requirements:

Lecturer

At least a Masters’ degree in Higher Education OR ICTs in Education OR a related qualification, preferably with progress being made towards a PhD.

  • Experience in using technologies for teaching and learning in higher education.
  • Teaching experience at tertiary level and/or research experience is required.
  • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

Recognising that diversity is important in achieving excellence, Rhodes University especially encourages South African members of underrepresented designated groups to apply. Spouses and partners of existing staff members are also encouraged to apply.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University’s recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit.  In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

If you have any questions or experiencing challenges on the system, please contact Ms Busi Nelana on 046 603 8971 or jobs-orange@ru.ac.za
