Job Details
In a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation we will assess the properties emerging from the interaction between the pores of surface supported networks and condensates formed therein. We shall investigate the onset of cooperative properties like electrical conductivity by a variety of experimental techniques including Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Photoelectron / Photoabsoprtio spectroscopy.
The University of Basel and the Paul Scherrer Institute, a sister institute of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology provide access to highly sensitive Surface Chemical Analysis tools, also at the Swiss Light Source. On the atomic scale experiments shall be performed by Scanning Probe Microscopy at low, variable temperatures in conjunction with other Surface Science preparation and investigation techniques.
For these research activities we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Surface / Interface Science
Ihre Aufgaben
In collaboration with the group leader you shall design the experimental strategy towards the systematic investigation of the onset of cooperative physical properties of condensates with the number of atoms incremented one by one. You shall be involved in the supervision of PhD and Master students as well as take the lead in at least one sub-project. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy experiments shall be performed at selected, variable, temperatures in UHV.
Surface Chemical Analysis experiments shall be performed at the Nanojunction Laboratory in Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). You will prepare samples and analyze them both at ambient conditions and in ultra high vacuum using a broad range of photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS), and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) amongst other techniques. Additionally, you will perform other surface analytical measurements (e.g. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)) at the Swiss Light Source – the synchrotron facility of PSI. Also you shall teach certain modules of the Nanoscience or Physics Curriculum at the University of Basel.
Ihr Profil
We seek for a highly motivated individual who enjoys working in a small team of scientists with different backgrounds. A doctorate degree in materials science, physics, physical chemistry or a related field is expected and an interdisciplinary background is of advantage. High level publications in one of the above mentioned fields are higly desirable but could be compensated by other documented qualification.
