DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER (FOUR POSTS)

RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of modules in the Department
• Developing a research programme in their area of expertise and/or expanding existing research programmes
• Publishing research articles in accredited national and international journals
• Supervising postgraduate Master’s and Doctoral students within the research focus areas
• Performing assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lecturer

• A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• One year teaching experience at university level
• The area of expertise must be in Civil Engineering
• Candidate must preferably be registered or registerable with the Engineering Council of South Africa or registered as Candidate Engineer
• A proven research record supported by publications in peer reviewed journals.

Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus)

• A PhD degree in Engineering that follows the previous qualification.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)

•  Show the ability to teach large undergraduate classes (> 150 students).

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

• Applicants must have an appropriate NRF research rating or be legible to apply for an appropriate rating
• Three years’ teaching experience at university level
•  Data science experience
• Geotechnical, materials, structural or water engineering postgraduate qualification/experience
• Civil engineering design experience
• Integration of engineering sciences
• Experience in civil engineering practice.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
