We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced social science researcher to join the inter-disciplinary team Clinical Ethics and Law at Southampton (CELS) located in the Faculty of Medicine. We are an interdisciplinary research group researching the ethical, legal and social issues arising from the integration of genomic technology into clinical practice and wider society.  

The location of this role is Southampton University Hospital Trust, as well as Highfield Campus.

You will be working on a Wellcome Trust Humanities and Social Science funded project “Facilitating Ethical Preparedness in Genomic Medicine (EPPiGEN)”. This collaborative cross-disciplinary project is jointly run with Professor Anneke Lucassen University of Southampton and Professor Bobbie Farsides at Brighton and Sussex medical School and as such will require close liaison with researchers and the leads across the two settings.

The project will begin as genomic medicine services are being rolled out within the NHS, and will examine the experience of staff and patients with a particular focus on their preparedness to cope with the ethical challenges of this transformational healthcare initiative. The overall purpose of the research will be to develop an understanding of the concept of ethical preparedness through the engagement of patients, practitioners and policy makers in the issues that the concept raises. 

The post holder will be involved in shaping the design of the study, appointing a research fellow to work with and supervising a clinical PhD fellowship.  

Applicants will need to be educated to PhD level or equivalent professional qualifications and experience; have a track record of published research; be able to demonstrate their ability to organise high quality research; their ability to engage in conceptual thinking; meet deadlines and lead a team of researchers.  Once appointed, applicants job title will be Senior Research Fellow.
