MUSEUM ASSISTANT, PEROMNES POST LEVEL 13

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Assisting in the maintenance of the FARC laboratory and the management of the forensic database
  • Assisting in the maceration of cadaver and forensic case material
  • Providing community service including analysing forensic cases, writing up reports for SAPS/Forensic Pathologists and assisting in the organisation of archaeological excavations
  • Assisting in training opportunities for postgraduate students and the SAPS
  • Providing support for undergraduate and postgraduate modules
  • Assisting in the maintenance and growth of the skeletal collections/repositories (research collection, student collection, archaeological collection, forensic collection, and digital repositories).

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • BSc Medical Sciences degree (SAQA NQF level 7) with modules in Human Osteology, Palaeoanthropology and Forensic Anthropology at undergraduate level
  • At least two years’ experience in handling human tissue and skeletal remains in a laboratory
  • Previous experience in macerating and processing cadaveric and forensic human material

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of human osteology
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Reliable team member who is able to work accurately and under pressure
  • Excellent communication and language skills (verbal and written)
  • Must be willing to work in a laboratory environment and be cognizant of the ethical handling of human remains in teaching and research
  • Able to communicate with the SAPS, investigating officers, and the public
  • Knowledgeable in basic archaeological methodology
  • Computer literate (particularly in database software, e.g. MS Excel)
  • Ability to engage with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training in forensic anthropology

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

  • BSc Honours in Anatomy (Physical Anthropology) or related biological/scientific field (SAQA NQF level 8)
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the FARC laboratory
  • Knowledge of forensic case analysis and report writing
  • Ability to engage with undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as the SAPS for training in human osteology and forensic methodology
  • At least three years’ experience in an anatomy environment concerning technical and training activities

 

Please Note: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process. The total remuneration package for this position is approximately R 251 012 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
