Job Purpose

Background
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities for an ESRC Future Research Leaders project “Geo-logics and Geo-politics: The Collective Governance of European Shale Gas Development”

Summary of Role
• Conduct research for the project, including field research and analysis of online data
• Analyse and interpret research findings and results
• Contribute to project administration and organisation of events
• Present and disseminate research outputs to a variety of audiences
• Contribute to developing future research collaborations and networks
Main Duties / Responsibilities
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
• Collect and analyse research data under the guidance of the PI; this may be through a variety of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, such as interviews, participant observation, literature reviews, and social network analysis
• Prepare working theories and analyse research data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate
• Present and disseminate research findings and outputs for a variety of audiences, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof
• Represent the research team at external meetings and events, for example seminars and conferences, either with the PI or alone
• Contribute to the organisation of project’s events, including stakeholder workshops and the final conference
• Contribute to developing new collaborative networks, research projects and bids for funding
• Manage own research activities and deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
• Undertake management/administration tasks arising from the project and provide guidance, as required, to support any staff or students who may be assisting with the research
• Contribute to the maintenance of project websites and blogs
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration as required
 

 

Person Specification

Person Specification
• PhD/DPhil degree in Human Geography, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Anthropology or a related discipline (or PhD submitted at the time of interview)
• Experience in social science research methods (such as interviews, participant observation, focus groups) and ability to contribute to developing new methods. Experience in Social Network Analysis is desired, but not essential
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, including ability to write and present research of publishable standard, engage with a range of stakeholders, and represent the project team at external events. Additional language skills in Polish and/or German are desired, but not essential
• Willingness to travel frequently and engage in international networks
• Previous experience of contributing to academic publications and presentations
• Ability to contribute to the planning and administration of the research project and related activities, including organisation of events
• Experience in teamwork and ability to co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
• Ability to use project resources effectively and understanding of broader management/administration processes
• Ability to contribute to research collaborations and ideas for future research projects
