Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham has a long and distinguished history in the field of practical theology and seeks applications towards a new post of lecturer (asst. prof) /senior lecturer (assoc. prof) in Practical Theology. The Department of Theology and Religion delivers a professional doctorate programme in practical theology, as well as providing supervision for other postgraduate research students in this field. The successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in this.

We have special interests in urban contextual theology, BME or Black theology, trauma, mental health and well-being. Our new colleague might contribute to the department's strengths in lived religion, constructive theology, or ethnography, but applicants with specialisation in other areas of practical theology (e.g. creative practice), preferably with a strong empirical research grounding, are welcome.

The department is ranked 2nd for the UK REF and our QS ranking among theology and religious studies departments worldwide is 23rd. The successful candidate will conduct world class and impactful research with published outputs to a standard appropriate for consideration under the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The department sees itself as an inclusive, supportive and collegial community, which is actively engaged in the life of the city and has an excellent track record with securing external funding and strong student satisfaction rates.
