Job Details

Do you have a passion to train those who will practically train and demonstrate to the engineers of the future? Do you know how to manage laboratories where engineering teaching takes place? We have the perfect job for you.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol is looking for an inspiring manager with a strong engineering or science background to take on a varied, demanding and extremely rewarding role. Using your background in the management of laboratory and support of project-based teaching and demonstration you will take charge of the Faculty’s teaching laboratories and all activities where Faculty technical staff support students in curricular units and project related activities.

It is essential you can manage a highly skilled team, some qualified to post-doctoral level, and organise work and activities to enable service delivery across different disciplines. Part of the role will see you interfacing with lecturers to formulate and affect practicable solutions to complex problems, using your staff and facilities. This will include overseeing laboratory timetabling, design and hiring of technical roles to support teaching activities, providing technical support to lecturers to enable them to deliver first-class teaching.

You will be a good communicator who can multitask and develop relationships quickly, make good decisions and take actions across specialisms outside of your own. Ideally you will have a background of managing teaching laboratories and associated staff (other equivalent experience is welcome too). Any of the following would be advantageous: Experience of training staff to train both university students and academic staff; experience of developing training material from first principles for a range of different subjects (e.g. hand tool use through to functional programming); experience of critically evaluating syllabus content to determine what technical support is needed and how it can be provided in a Higher or Further Education establishment.

The University offers excellent employee benefits, including a generous annual leave entitlement, pension schemes and opportunities for staff development and flexible working.

This position is being offered on a full time, open-ended contract.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place shortly after the closing date.

For informal discussion about the post, you are welcome to contact:

Greg Kemble, Technical Services Manager greg.kemble@bristol.ac.uk

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
