    The Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. It is a centre for learning, teaching and research in a vast range of engineering disciplines, computer science and high level mathematics.     The School of Computer Science is one of seven schools that make up the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. It offers high quality accredited degrees in computer science, and software engineering, has strong links with industry and a robust research ethos.

    The successful applicant will work with researchers in the Australian Institute of Machine Learning at the University of Adelaide, in particular Profs Ian Reid and Anton Van Den Hengel, and also collaborate with researchers from the multi-institution ARC Centre of Excellence in Robotic Vision, and various industrial partners. Programming activities will include implementation of solutions for novel navigation behaviours for robots and self-driving cars based on deep learning.

    The AIML is the largest computer vision and image analysis research group in Australia. Based in Adelaide, it currently has more than 100 members including academics, research staff and students.  The group works on a variety of fundamental and commercially oriented research projects in computer vision and machine learning, and has a very strong track record of publications in the top venues, and of successful technology transfer.

    The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies (ACVT) is seeking an individual to develop highly optimised programs and systems for a variety of exciting computer vision and robotics applications, converting research ideas into robust, efficient code.

    The successful candidate will enjoy a “hands-on” approach to experimentation and “making stuff really work”. You will therefore have an excellent track record in development of software, and ideally have some experience of using open source packages such as opencv and ROS. A degree in computer science, engineering or related discipline is essential. You must be a strong team player, and be able to communicate and work with the investigators and industrial partners to coordinate systems development across the team.  A solid mathematical background with a clear understanding of areas such as probability, linear algebra and optimisation is essential.

    Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies .

    Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for a duration of two years, with the possibility of further extension.

     

    Position requirements

    To be successful you should have:

    • A degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
    • Demonstrably outstanding programming skills in C++ and Matlab
    • A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners
    • A solid mathematical background with a clear understanding of areas such as probability, linear algebra and optimisation
    • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and written
