nGAP - Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Medical Virology

Appointment is made on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the National Health Laboratory Service on the conditions of service of the University.

Duties

  • Conducting virological research on topics aligned with institutional and national thematic priority areas and strategies;
  • Generating external grant funding to support the research;
  • Developing new tests and techniques in order to optimise and improve the provision of diagnostic and identification of services and to improve existing laboratory tests;
  • Training and supervising postgraduate students and publishing scientific papers;
  • Participating in the Division’s and Faculty’s teaching at under- and postgraduate level, as well as managerial and administrative matters.

 

Requirements

  • Masters’ degree in Virology or a related field for appointment as lecturer, or a PhD in a relevant field (preferably virology) for appointment as senior lecturer;
  • Registration as a Medical Scientist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • Proven experience with virological laboratory research;
  • Experience as (co-)supervisor for postgraduate students;
  • The applicant should aspire to an academic career as a scientist in medical virology.
