Job Details

The project will support the development of methods and tools to enhance the physical modelling of fluid-structure interaction phenomena important in multidisciplinary optimisation studies, and the assessment of these methods for a range of problems relevant in aeronautics (e.g. transonic buffeting, flapping flight mechanics).

The proposed work aims at improving the modelling of fluid flows, structural dynamics, and models targeting their coupled dynamics. Measurements with the associated uncertainty are considered given and will be taken as input of the data assimilation, and are used to estimate model parameters. The final objective of these activities is to provide more reliable models, complying with experimental data, to investigate complex fluid and fluid-structure phenomena. To improve fluid and coupled fluid-structure prediction methods, we will introduce machine learning techniques to tune both turbulence and structural models. Data assimilation schemes will be derived, assimilating PIV data to tune the turbulence model that best captures the measured flowfield. This flowfield is then an input to the structural model, which will predict the response of the structure. This response can then be compared to the measured structural response as well as the measured forces/moments. Depending on the outcome, the structural or flow model can be further tuned to ensure consistency and improved general predictive capabilities accessing time and space-accurate measurements in wind and water tunnels.

The project will contribute to:

Candidates must hold a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and have an excellent research track record. Further experience of working with the DLR-Tau and/or SU2 solvers would be advantageous.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The University of Southampton is in the top one per cent of world universities and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. The successful candidate will join one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering and environmental research and education, rated number one in the UK for research power in REF 2014.

Please include a covering letter and full CV in your application.
