Research Fellow or Research Engineer - Data Analytics

To join a creative, innovative and friendly team at the IT Innovation Centre, which is part of the School of Electronics and Computer Science. Based on the Southampton Science Park, we have an international reputation for advancing a wide range of information technologies and enabling their adoption. Current work includes big data, information security, and human-machine interactions, applied in various sectors including the environment, healthcare and transport.

Focused on robust approaches to research and software development in an agile team environment, our Research Engineers/Research Fellows are involved in all aspects of project lifecycles, including user requirements, architecture design  and implementations which lead to research outputs and proof of concept demonstrators

The post is full time for 12 months in the first instance, renewable subject to funding and satisfactory performance. Applications from individuals seeking part time, job share or flexible working arrangements will be considered.

 

You

You will maximise your problem-solving skills, working effectively within our creative, innovative team to meet and adapt to new challenges. 

Your knowledge of new and emerging technologies will be utilised collaboratively to create positive change and impacts to business/society with the consequence of bringing research closer to market. You have good written and oral communication skills to present your ideas clearly and effectively to colleagues, project partners and clients.

You have the desire to identify and develop compelling software-based applications of big data technologies in the Big Data engineering challenges, which we are addressing in projects such as BigMedilytics, Transforming Transport, SEDNA and FloraGuard.

You will have a PhD* or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience in computer science or a related discipline, good analytical and software development skills.

You have expertise in machine learning, text mining, data clustering techniques and ideally NLP. Programming languages such as Java, Python and R and knowledge of technologies such as Storm, Spark, Hadoop, Hive or HBase is desirable.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Please note, if you are appointed as a Research Engineer under the Enterprise career pathway, your job title will be Enterprise Fellow on appointment.
