Muon tomography for inspection of concrete structures in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Particle Physics Group of the School of Physics, University of Bristol. The position is funded by STFC for a short-term project to investigate the applicability of muon scattering tomography for health assessments of concrete structures. The post is currently funded for 6 months with possibility for extension.

The University of Bristol is working on this project in collaboration with an industrial partner.

You will be running and analyzing GEANT4 simulations of a variety of structures, using and improving our existing imaging algorithms. The goal of the project is to evaluate the potential of muon scattering tomography for structural health assessments. You will be working with an academic and a postdoctoral researcher at University of Bristol, who are collaborating with partners from other universities in the UK and EU. Although the bulk of the work will be simulations-based, the opportunity exists to participate in experimental data taking in the lab.

Bristol has a long-standing tradition in developing detectors and data acquisition systems for particle physics. We are involved in the upgrades of CERN LHC experiments, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), Short baseline Oscillation search with Lithium-6 Detector (SoLid) and Mu3e. Some of our detector systems also have important applications outside of Particle Physics. Currently, we are also applying our know-how of developing detector systems to the medical, nuclear and home land security industry.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Anna Kopp (Anna.Kopp@bristol.ac.uk) or Dr Jaap Velthuis (Jaap.Velthuis@bristol.ac.uk), both School of Physics, University of Bristol.
