The Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health aims to support the introduction, piloting and scaling-up of high quality, high impact interventions to improve maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (MNCAH) in Pakistan by harnessing the potential of both the public and the private sector, coupled with the introduction of women and girls’ empowerment interventions.

 

Responsibilities

The Deputy Director, reporting to the Founding Director of the Centre of Excellence Women and Child Health (CoE WCH), will play a pivotal role in leading and directing the overall research functions of the Centre in an academic medical setting across Central Asia and Pakistan. The person will provide leadership for the strategic planning, design and implementation of a research portfolio spread over remote and urban sites in Pakistan; ensure compliance with the University, the grant agencies and international research policies and regulations; and oversee timely and cost-effective grant execution.

 

Core responsibilities will be to:

  • Define and drive strategic planning and operational initiatives to strengthen the overall research portfolio at CoE WCH
  • Develop innovative and sustainable strategies to bring more efficiency into the existing capacity at CoE WCH and the University, through the adoption of international standards and techniques
  • Lead a review of CoE WCH’s research activities, identify areas of change and implement the change while continuing with on-going activities
  • Direct and implement institutional policies, objectives and initiatives, ensuring effective and efficient deployment in all research activities
  • Streamline processes and ensure appropriate management of financial budgets, targets, resources to continuously improve the cost effectiveness of research grants
  • Design and introduce effective quality and operational control mechanisms as well as audit techniques to strengthen the overall research portfolio of CoE WCH
  • Provide technical assessment, take decisions to resolve complex issues, approve the engagement of a consulting firm, consultant, sub-contractor or sub-grantee if required for a particular project, in consultation with the Principal Investigator of the project
  • Conduct monitoring visits to field sites to ensure that project activities are in line with the timelines agreed to with the granting agencies
  • Serve as a strong advocate for research faculty and fellows and resolve research-related issues. Also, represent, advocate and promote departmental research at relevant organizational forums
  • Provide guidance on research projects and academic initiatives and mentor the CoE WCH team and collaborators at the national and international level
  • Plan the long-term career development of employees and recommend relevant trainings with the aim of enhancing their technical capacity in line with CoE WCH goals
  • Build strategic relationships with relevant stakeholders at national and international level which includes local, federal and national government offices, community stakeholders and international granting agencies
  • Work with the Founding Director CoE WCH to ensure that strategic goals are achieved and that deliverable-based indicators are in line with international benchmarks.

 

Requirements

Qualified candidates should have:

  • A Master’s degree at the minimum in a relevant field; an undergraduate medical degree with additional qualifications and professional certifications will be an advantage
  • 10 years’ experience at the senior management or leadership level or a faculty rank of assistant professor and above, with at least five years of experience in women and child health in Pakistan or abroad
  • Demonstrated experience of managing multiple extramural and intramural research grants.

  • Ability to make high-risk strategic decisions that have significant consequences
  • Ability to foster an environment that anticipates and acts upon potential threats and opportunities.
  • Ability to develop, sponsor, or support the introduction of new and improved methods, products, procedures, or technologies
  • Excellent diplomacy skills and a proven ability to establish and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with all stakeholders
  • Successful track record of capacity building senior staff in an academic medical environment with experience and interest in advancing research careers
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills with an ability to describe complex ideas in a clear and meaningful way; to present data and information to various forums and at different levels
  • Willingness to travel extensively, nationally and internationally, including visits to field projects across the country.
