Lecturer: German

 

A rare and exciting opportunity exists at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, for a dynamic, competent and adaptable academic to join this active section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages. All foreign language programmes in our Department are based on an intercultural and communicative approach and are designed to provide a thorough competence in the spoken and written form of the target language.

 

Duties

  • Teaching German language, culture and literature at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Postgraduate supervision;
  • Developing course material and assessment opportunities;
  • Conducting research in the field of German Studies, the teaching of German as a Foreign Language, or in other related fields, such as Comparative Literature;
  • Performing administrative and organisational functions as required by the Department;
  • Student development;
  • Developing teaching and assessment material on e-learning platforms.

 

Requirements

  • MA degree in German or in a related field, such as Comparative Literature;
  • Experience in the teaching of German as a foreign language in South Africa, or in a similar context;
  • A keen interest in research and a proven record of publications;
  • Experience of university administration and organisation;
  • The ability to function well within a team;
  • The ability to communicate fluently in German and English.

 

Applicants are requested to submit, apart from the prescribed application form and a CV, a motivation letter containing a concise exposition of their expertise, their view of the future of German language and literature teaching at Stellenbosch University, and in South Africa in general, and their envisaged role and contribution to such a future. 

 

Desirable

  • PhD degree in German or in a related field, such as Comparative Literature, is a strong recommendation, given the scope of the duties and responsibilities;
  • Experience or interest in using technology for language learning;
  • Experience or interest in the field of Comparative Literature;
  • Knowledge and/or experience of translation or translation studies;
  • Knowledge of Afrikaans and/or another South African language.
