ARC Grant-Funded Researcher (A), School of Biological Sciences

Job Details

  • Join the team saving native biota
  • Collaborate with University of Adelaide, University of Copenhagen & State University of New York
  • Ecological Modeller (Global Change)
  •

The University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading Group of Eight, research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world. Established in 1874, it is Australia's third oldest university with a strong reputation for preparing educated leaders and delivering research outcomes that contribute to local, national and global wellbeing.

The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as biomedical sciences, agricultural, environmental and earth sciences, and photonics, the faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.

The School of Biological Sciences is one of four schools in the Faculty of Sciences. Located at the University's North Terrace campus, the school consists of approximately 600 people including research, teaching and professional staff, and students in honours and research. The school was formed in 2015 to coordinate and consolidate the University's cutting edge and world-class research and teaching in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Molecular & Biomedical Science

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead the development of spatially explicit demographic models that use characteristics of past population dynamics from fossils and species genes to reconstruct the range dynamics of select megafauna and medium-sized vertebrates in three broad geographic regions (Eurasia, America and Oceania) over the last 21,000 years. The resulting models will be used to identify the ecological processes that regulate the severity of threats from climate and land-use change, over-exploitation on range shifts and extinctions. They will also be used to develop the capacity to target conservation management resources more effectively to slow or redirect future range contractions.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of a recently funded Australian Research Council Discovery Project, which is establishing the ecological mechanisms of range contractions to avert extinctions of native biota. The project is integrating biotic information from fossils and ancient DNA of vertebrates into computational models to determine ecological processes that drive the structure and dynamics of geographical ranges and regulate the severity of species extinction rates from drivers of global change. The successful candidate would work closely with a diverse and highly skilled group of researchers from the University of Adelaide, University of Copenhagen and the State University of New York.

    Salary: (Level A) $67,894 - $91,425 per annum.

Superannuation: A minimum employer contribution of 9.5% applies.

Term of position: This fixed-term position is available immediately for a period of 2 years, with possibility of extending the position.

    Position requirements:

    • A PhD in quantitative ecology, evolutionary biology, applied mathematics or a related Discipline
    • A strong publication record in the relevant peer-reviewed literature
    • Experience with building spatially explicit models
    • Strong computational and analytical programming skills
    • A good knowledge of advanced statistical languages such as R or Matlab
    • Experience working with geographic information systems

    Desirable Characteristics:

    • Experience with metapopulation and/or individual based models
    • Knowledge of Bayesian methods, including Approximate Bayesian Computation
    • Experience with big data analysis
