  • Willingness to work flexibly, when necessary, to fulfil the needs of the research project
  • Evidence of an ability to work individually and in a research team
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety requirements within the laboratory setting
  • Familiarity with computer packages for data analysis
  • The ability and willingness to keep up with and have a working knowledge of the scientific literature in the field of the project
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  •

Applications are invited for a highly motivated and organised post-doctoral research fellow to join the Stewart laboratory, based at the University of Birmingham, to work on understanding how inherited deficiencies in components of the DNA damage response, particularly proteins involved in DNA repair and/or DNA replication, contribute to the development of human disease (for examples see: Ogiet al (2012) PLoS Genet 8:e1002945; Murrayet al (2015) Am J Hum Genet 96:412-24; Harley et al (2016) Nat Genet 48:36-43; Byrdet al (2016) PLoS Genet 12:e1005945).

Ongoing research projects within the laboratory focus on characterising the impact of patient-associated mutations in known DNA repair/replication genes on genome stability, the identification of novel human disease genes associated with defective DNA repair/replication and identifying roles for previously uncharacterised genes/proteins in the DNA damage response (for example: Higgs et al (2015) Mol Cell 59:462-77; Higgs et al (2018) Mol Cell Epub).

Candidates will be expected to undertake novel, cutting-edge, laboratory-based research within the field of the DNA damage response and replication, specified within a CR-UK funded research programme.
