Job Details

The Dean is responsible for providing intellectual, academic, managerial and administrative leadership to achieve the UFS strategic goals at faculty level.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leadership and management of the Faculty of Theology and Religion in respect of teaching-learning, research and community service.
  • Manage resources, including equitable distribution of resources to optimise strategic and academic planning aims.
  • Liaise with persons and organisations in and outside the University.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and build partnership at provincial, national and international level, for example with universities, church denominations, authorities, alumni, parents and other stakeholders.
  • The Dean is a member of the Executive Committee of the Senate as well as the Senate and reports to the Vice-Rector: Academic.
  • In addition to the position as Dean, the duties of the successful staff member will also, as far as it is possible, include teaching and research.
  •  

    Inherent requirements:

    • A Doctorate in Theology.
    • Five (5) years academic management experience at higher education level.
    • A proven research record.
    • Suitability for appointment as Professor at the University of the Free State.

     

    Required competencies:

    • The ability to continue the epistemelogical transformation of the Faculty of Theology and Religion.
    • A good understanding of the management of change, diversity and perceptions.
    • Proven general leadership ability and management experience.
    • Financial management ability and operational thoroughness.
    • Good human relations and the ability to unite people.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function comfortably in the UFS’s richly diverse work environment.
    • Business acumen.
    • Results orientated.
    • Strategic thinking.
    • Leading.
    • Building coalitions

     

    Recommendations:

    • Rating as researcher with the National Research Foundation (NRF).

     

    Term of office:

     Five (5) years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term.

     

    Candidates must be prepared to participate in the approved appointment procedure which can comprise the following:

  • An interview conducted by a selection committee.
  • Management profile evaluation.
  • Other written or oral assessments.
  • Public appearance before the Faculty of Theology and Religion.
  • Confidential reference checking.
  •
