Duties and responsibilities:

  • Teach and assess modules undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Provide study guidance and supervision to final year and postgraduate students.
  • Contribute to programme development and curriculum review.
  • Initiate, conduct and sustain high-level research.
  • Disseminate recognised research through appropriate channels, including publishing articles in accredited journals and participating in workshops, conferences and symposia in Social Work.
  • Participate in community service and establish a reciprocal relationship between community engagement, research and teaching activities.
  • Maintain continued professional development and evaluation of practice relating to teaching, learning and assessment in line with qualifications, experience, changes in the subject discipline, pedagogic development and innovation in learning technology.
  • Contribute towards creating a strong academic identity.
  • Perform organisational and administrative duties.

    Inherent requirements:

    Lecturer:

    • Master’s degree in Social Work.
    • Registration at the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
    • Proven experience in the delivery of presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
    • Proven experience in social work education or presentation of workshops.
    • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
    • A good academic record.
    • A valid driver’s license. 

     

    Senior Lecturer:

  • PhD in Social Work.
  • Registration at the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
  • Proven experience in social work education or presentation of workshops.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national scholarly conferences.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
  • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
  • Proven experience in supervision of graduated masters’ students.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  •  

    Required competencies:

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • The ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse working environment.
    • Organisational skills to coordinate modules with large student numbers.
    • Excellent computer skills.

     

    Recommendations:

    Lecturer:

    • PhD in Social Work or willingness to enrol for a doctoral degree in Social Work at the first available opportunity.
    • Excellent academic research record.
    • One (1) year’s proven experience in Generic Social Work.
    • One (1) year’s proven experience of teaching at University level or field instruction of final year social work students.

     

    Senior Lecturer

    • One (1) year’s proven experience in Generic Social Work.
    • One (1) year’s proven experience of teaching at University level or field instruction of final year social work students.

     

    Assumption of duties:

    1 January 2019.
