Duties and responsibilities:

  • Market department at Nampo, Bloem Show, Mega week, UFS Open day.
  • Manage and prepare the large capital equipment budget for the department.
  • Assist with animal nutrition practicals and chemical analysis in animal nutrition laboratory.
  • Present practicals for metabolic and nutrition studies.
  • Provide training in sheep digestibility studies with small stock.
  • Teach students skills in the handling of farm animals.
  • Train emerging farmers in animal handling, herd management and field management.
  • Select and purchase of suitable experimental animals for student training.
  • Arrange student excursions including transport and accommodation.
  • Organise final year student tour to various farmers and institutions in the Northern Cape and act as tour manager and assist with arrangements of congresses.
  • Responsible for service and maintenance (quotations and replacement) of laboratory equipment.
  • Attend to operational requirements of laboratories and agricultural buildings (access, technical issues regarding equipment, quotations and ordering of all chemicals for laboratories, etc.)

    Inherent requirements:

    • Diploma or degree in Agriculture.
    • Two (2) to three (3) years’ relevant working experience.
    • Valid driver’s license.

     

    Required competencies:

    • Technical background/knowledge and ability to solve problems in a practical manner.
    • Technical skills.
    • Inherent knowledge of farm animals.
    • Knowledge in management of rumen and esophagus fistulae animals.
    • Knowledge in management of an in-vitro animal nutrition laboratory.
    • Business Acumen.

    • Building Coalitions.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and, the ability to function well in the university’s richly diverse working environment.

    1 October 2018 or as soon as possible
