We are a large, inter-disciplinary school and persuasive applications are welcome from across the social sciences. We would be particularly pleased to receive applications aligned to sociology and social policy, with strength and specialism in the following:

 

  • Social theory (classical and/or contemporary)
  • Race and ethnicity
  • Inequality, poverty and deprivation in global perspective


This post is full-time, open ended and available from 1st October 2018.

Job Description

 

To pursue disciplined and original academic research and publication, and to contribute to the provision of an exceptional university education for undergraduate and post-graduate students.
 

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research

  • To pursue academic research and scholarship in the social sciences, working independently and with colleagues, contributing to the overall research profile and performance of the School.
  • To publish academic work of high quality, rigour and originality, working independently and with colleagues.
  • To develop academic research plans and projects, working independently and with colleagues; to seek external research funding where appropriate.
  • To develop an academic profile and network, nationally and internationally, sharing and collaborating in the advancement of understanding.
  • To take responsibility for the supervision and development of postgraduate research students and research staff.
  • To play a full and active part in the wider research culture and practices of the school.

 

Teaching

  • To teach undergraduate and post-graduate classes as per the teaching needs of the School and according to specialism.
  • To set, oversee, process and mark student examinations and assessments, including associated administrative duties; to provide students with challenging and constructive feedback on their work and pastoral support for their studies.
  • To supervise the dissertation and other independent study of individual students at undergraduate and post-graduate level, including the academic supervision of doctoral study.
  • To pursue teaching-related disciplinary and inter-disciplinary scholarship in support of excellent teaching.
  • To contribute to module and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Other

  • To engage professionally and imaginatively with relevant external organisations and academic institutions in the pursuit of opportunities for alliance and collaboration, as a contribution to the national and international profile of the School.
  • To contribute fully to the academic administration of the School.
  • To engage with the School and University’s civic mission: promoting social cohesion, health, wealth and wellbeing.
  • Any other duties not included above but consistent with the role, as directed by the Head of School.

 

 

Person Specification


Essential Criteria

  • PhD in sociology, social policy or related social science field.
  • Clear and promising academic career profile and a definite sense of how that academic career might contribute to and flourish in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff.
  • Strong and promising record of academic research and publication.
  • Emergent and promising national and international academic reputation within field or discipline(s).
  • Willingness and proven ability to identify opportunities for external funding in support of research activity.
  • Significant experience of university teaching at a high standard and a strong commitment to the student experience, including pastoral support.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of the School’s teaching programmes.
