Cardiff School of Modern Languages has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching, and we give students the opportunity to pursue their interest in languages in an exciting, interdisciplinary environment.  We educate around 800 students annually on our full time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and a further 2500-3000 through our university wide Languages for All Programme and our contribution to the university’s part-time and evening language courses designed for personal and professional development.

Applicants are invited to apply for a position as part-time Teacher at the Cardiff School of Modern Languages to deliver a module on British Politics, Society and/or Culture to the incoming ERASMUS exchange students. You will be required to deliver high quality teaching and pursue excellence in teaching, and inspire others to do the same.   

You will have a good first degree in a related subject, a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience, and previous teaching experience relevant to the subject area(s) of expertise.       

This position is part-time and available immediately. Semester 1 starts on Monday 24th September, with a training week scheduled for staff commencing Monday 17th September. 

The position is fixed term until 31st July 2019 in the first instance.  You would be required to deliver one lecture per week over 11 weeks each semester. Assessment/marking and academic administration hours will vary throughout the year. 

Salary:  £32,548 - £38,833 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 6, equivalent to £17.53 to £20.92 per hour).

Job Purpose

  • You will design, prepare, and deliver a module on British Society and/or Culture to the incoming ERASMUS exchange students, including preparing and supervising different modes of assessment, carry out work associated with examinations and exams boards, undertake departmental administrative tasks, supervise student projects/dissertations and carry out teaching-related administrative duties.

 

Job description

  • To design teaching programmes for modules, which includes identifying learning objectives and selecting appropriate curricula; selecting teaching methods, resources and reading; determining, designing and producing study material; planning course delivery and planning for contingencies such as slower/faster progress than anticipated.
  • To deliver teaching on the undergraduate programme to incoming ERASMUS exchange students.  This will include preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.
  • To carry out assessment for courses.  This may include designing assessment instruments and, as required, criteria; marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation; providing written/oral feedback; contributing to the assessment of student circumstances in relation to the assessment; and collating and providing final assessments of students.
  • To carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
  • To carry out pastoral role for students such as acting as Personal Tutor. If necessary refer them to the appropriate authority for guidance.   
  • To carry out an administrative role within the department as required, or undertake other activity to contribute to the organisation of the department independently or with others, as required (Teaching-related and administrative work is allocated by the Programme Director for ERASMUS and the Head of School).  
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.

Essential Criteria  

Qualifications and Education

  • Good first degree in a related subject/area.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience.       

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven ability to take full responsibility for the design, delivery and co-ordination of teaching programme(s).
  • Evidence of excellent teaching skills (in particular course and lesson planning, group management and methods of assessment.
  • Evidence of appropriate knowledge in relation to the proposed subject area(s) of teaching.
  • Previous teaching experience relevant to the subject area(s) of expertise.
  • Evidence of competence in standard office IT: word processing, presentations and email, along with evidence of familiarity with IT-based language learning tools.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work, and evidence of ability to work in a collegiate and collaborative manner.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances, and to act as a personal tutor.

 
Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant professional qualification(s).
  • Experience of delivering non-language modules/content within a Higher Education context.
  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching activities of the School.
