Job Details

We are seeking a candidate to join a large and enthusiastic research community of academics, post-docs and PhD students at the University of Southampton’s world-leading Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). The candidate will be part of a team specialising in ultrafast laser processing and developing novel laser-based manufacturing approaches. The post-holder will fabricate and characterise samples using both the laser facilities managed by the group and the cleanroom facilities at the ORC. 

We are therefore seeking a researcher with PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in optoelectronics or physics. Experience relating to one or more of the following areas will be desirable: lasers and laser machining; analysis techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, stylus profiling and interferometric methods; familiarity with sample preparation via spin-coating, sputter deposition and e-beam evaporation.

The applicant will need to be confident interacting with the team as well as with our industrial collaborators. Travel to external research team meetings will be expected as will to conferences in the UK and overseas.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
