Professor / Associate Professor – Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching & Learning (CHERTL)

Recognising that diversity is important in achieving excellence, Rhodes University especially encourages South African members of underrepresented designated groups to apply. Spouses and partners of existing staff members are also encouraged to apply.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University’s recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit.  In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

The Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Learning at Rhodes University has developed a national reputation for academic staff development. Its well-theorised and innovative approaches to formal higher education studies and short courses are highly regarded and its research output provides a significant contribution to the sector.

We are also seeking to appoint, at the Associate Professor and Professor levels, someone to take on the coordination of the vibrant and highly-successful CHERTL doctoral programme. This will entail the incumbent taking on a major supervisory role. S/he will be required to contribute to and build on existing research programmes in the Centre, including the development of funding proposals for further projects. In addition, the candidate should have the expertise to devise and contribute to a range of activities to develop the research capacity of doctoral students. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of the field of Higher Education Studies through their own research.

In addition to the above roles, the incumbent will be required to contribute to the development and support of academics in their roles as educators at tertiary level. The support and development are provided by:

  • Teaching on formal courses intended to enhance teaching and learning (not only at Rhodes University, but also across the higher education sector)
  • Providing consultancy on issues relating to teaching and learning and
  • Supporting academics as they meet the requirements related to the enhancement and assurance of quality (for example, through student feedback)
