The Ichthyology Lab of the University of São Paulo's Zoology Museum (MZUSP) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation -- FAPESP as part of the Thematic Project “Diversity and evolution of Gymnotiformes (Teleostei, Ostariophysi)”, an initiative in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution. To be considered candidates must to meet the following requirements:

  • 1. Completed their PhD less than seven years before the beginning of the fellowship;
    2. Document their capacity and experience to work with Bioinformatics and Genomics (B & G);
    3. Experience on systematics of fishes.

We are looking for a motivated and dedicated individual with the ability to carry out an independent research using B & G method as well as working and training students during a 2-year postdoctoral position to understand continental diversification in tube snouted electric fishes of the genus Sternarchorhynchus. 

The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP fellowship with an annual stipend of BRL 86,097.60 free of income Tax plus a lump sum to cover relocation expenses. In addition, it provides an annual research allowance--equivalent to 15 percent of the value of the fellowship. The position must be completed in residence in São Paulo, Brazil. A possible additional year to work abroad at the National Museum of Natural History (with Dr. C. David de Santana, SI PI on the project) and/or Cornell University (Dr. Casey Dillman, Co-PI) could be granted through a BEPE (Research Internships Abroad) of FAPESP. 

The research will be conducted in the MZUSP under supervision of Dr. Naércio Menezes, coordinator of the project. During his/her stay at the MZUSP the selected candidate will have access to the resources necessary to conduct the proposed research. These include, but are not limited to, access to the largest fish collection in South America, 3D micro CT Scan, and molecular facility. Furthermore, the person will have the opportunity to take part of field expeditions that will be conducted during the course of the Thematic Project.
