Job Details

We have an excellent opportunity for a talented plant molecular geneticist to join Professor Claire Grierson's established research programme and investigate how plant genes increase root-soil cohesion. The research will build on existing studies that show that root hairs affect soil properties, modify pore structure (New Phyt. 216: 124-135, 2017) and increase the strength of root-soil composites in ways that prevent water erosion (Grierson research group De Baets et al., under review).

The post-holder will characterise candidate genes with roles in root-substrate cohesion that we have identified in a novel genetic screen for mutants in genes that affect the adhesion of Arabidopsis roots to the surface of solidified plant growth medium. They will investigate gene expression patterns, obtain and confirm the identity and nature of mutant and transgenic lines, and carry out morphological and biochemical characterisation to discover molecular mechanisms that promote root-soil cohesion.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in plant molecular genetics or a related discipline and a strong track record of research, including experience of quantifying gene expression, morphological and biochemical characterisation of mutants and/or cultivars and the routine use of Arabidopsis databases. You will be enthusiastic about the proposed research, including the multidisciplinary environment and opportunity to collaborate with biophysicists and environmental scientists. In addition, experience of the following is not essential but would be desirable: Research on roots and/or soils; experience of statistical analysis; bioinformatics expertise, such as the analysis of genome sequence data; and plant tissue, organ and cell imaging.

Alongside your main research duties you will also be able to develop your teaching expertise, supervise practical project students and support PhD student research, and develop and deliver undergraduate teaching, such as lectures, tutorials and marking, when needed.

The University of Bristol values and promotes equality and diversity. We appreciate and value differences between people, and sees to attract, develop and retain a mix of people that will contribute to overall success and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.

This position is full-time, Mon-Fri standard (flexible working options considered) and is open-ended with funding available for 4 years.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Claire Grierson (Claire.Grieson@bristol.ac.uk).

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
