Job Details
The post-holder is expected to take a lead role in the co-ordination and management of the NIHR-funded Research Design Service West Midlands (RDSWM). They will oversee all aspects of the management of the RDSWM including: engagement with the local NHS and other relevant stakeholders; defining, commissioning and maintaining databases to support RDS functions; collation and reporting of data on the function and performance of the service; engagement and publicity activities; co-ordinating regional services including those delivered at the three RDSWM hubs; devising and co-ordinating a regional programme of events for external and internal (RDS staff) stakeholders; and financial monitoring.
The post holder will be responsible for oversight of the Management of the new RDSWM contract, acting as a key link between the RDSWM Regional Director, the three RDSWM Hub Leads, the Lead Administrator, the Hub administrators, the national RDS office, and relevant external stakeholder organisations. The post carries a high degree of management and developmental responsibility for the professional administration of the RDSWM, its staff and its services. A core expectation of the role is the ability to think strategically and creatively in order to ensure that the operational objectives of the RDSWM are met in a consistent manner that meets the requirements of the NIHR.
Person Specification
- Educated to degree level or equivalent qualifications/experience
- Previous office administration experience
- Ability to show initiative and prioritise multiple work tasks
- Working knowledge of Office software, including email, Word and Excel, in particular, experience of managing complex databases
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a range of staff and students in a wide range of styles, appropriate to different individuals, groups, and situations
- Flexible attitude towards work activity of team, which may vary according to workload
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with staff at all levels, either internal or external to the University, developing effective working relationships
- The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately, ensuring compliance with University standards.
- Must be able to think strategically - able to shape and influence the management element of the RDSWM
- Must be highly numerate - able to interpret and present numerical information accurately, and assimilate new and complex information rapidly
- Must have good organisational skills and must be able to manage the conflicting pressures of long-term planning and short-term demand
- Must have first rate interpersonal skills - able to advise and influence senior academic staff, external NHS and other stakeholders, and have a high level of credibility
- Significant management experience in research gained in a University, Higher Education or NHS setting
- Proven knowledge and understanding of research and service management issues such as data protection and governance
- Ability to plan and organise a large workload to meet both internal and external deadlines
- Experience of managing complex services or equivalent
- Experience of working with a range of stakeholders to help manage complex services or equivalent
- Experience of financial monitoring
- Experience in engagement activities and organisation of events
