The Faculty of Science is recruiting a Scientific Officer to sit within the Technical Services team. The Faculty of Science has five research laboratories based in the Broadway Campus of UTS. All five laboratories cluster together equipment, hardware, personnel and operational facilities to support staff and students at UTS.

The Faculty of Science five Research Laboratory areas are; Ernst Facility, Medical and Molecular Biosciences Research Laboratory, Environment Research Laboratory, Chemical Technologies Research Laboratory and Microstructural Analysis Unit and Physics Research Laboratory.  The Research Laboratories advance the Faculty of Science research mission and as such have an industry link focus.

The Scientific Officer provides specialised technical services, determining the appropriate use of established methods, tasks and sequences in the use of equipment located in the MAU and Physics Research Laboratories. The Scientific Officer is responsible for providing high-level technical support for teaching, research and training. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the specialist technical needs of the Research Laboratory.

 

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Provision of specialist services in X-ray diffraction in the Research Laboratory
  • Assist in the delivery of all undergraduate/postgraduate subjects and industry focused short courses that run in the Research Laboratory
  • Developing and implementing training to student and staff that use the Research Laboratory
  • Maintaining the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including but not limited to; ordering material, maintaining online systems, WHS reviews, developing operating procedures

 

Main skills and/or experience required:

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team including ability to respond to changing circumstances and critical situations and provide leadership within group
  • Ability to instruct and train researchers and students on the principles and practice of X-ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of specialised scientific equipment
  • A relevant degree and formal study of XRD techniques including structure analysis of a range of materials and different instrument configurations or an equivalent combination of relevant specialised technical experience and/or education/training

 

This role attracts 9.5% superannuation in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
