Dean of the Faculty of Law

The University of Hong Kong
The University of Hong Kong, Asia's global University, delivers impact through internationalization, innovation and interdisciplinarity. It attracts and nurtures global scholars through excellence in research, teaching and learning, and knowledge exchange. It makes a positive social contribution through global presence, regional significance and engagement with the rest of China. The University has a comprehensive range of study programmes and research disciplines spread across 10 faculties and over 140 academic departments and institutes/centres. There are 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students who are recruited globally, and more than 2,000 members of academic and academic-related staff coming from multi-cultural backgrounds, many of whom are internationally renowned.

The Position
Appointment will normally be made on a 5-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. The position carries the status and title of Professor. The Faculty of Law was founded in 1969 and plays a leading role in legal education in Hong Kong and Asia, through its various undergraduate, research postgraduate, and taught postgraduate programmes covering a wide range of legal subject areas. With the reunification of Hong Kong and China in 1997, the Faculty of Law occupies a uniquely strategic position as the pre-eminent law school in the only common law jurisdiction in China. This has helped extend and develop teaching and research in areas beyond the Faculty's traditional excellence in its undergraduate common law programme, its professional legal practice programme, as well as its various taught and research postgraduate programmes. In addition to its strengths in public law, corporate and financial law, Chinese law, international economic law, intellectual property and information technology law and alternative dispute resolution, the Faculty is placing more than ever greater emphasis on comparative legal issues, and on the provision of common law training to top mainland scholars and students. This has enabled the Faculty to become a close partner with prestigious Chinese institutions in training scholars and practitioners for the increasingly globalised mainland economy, as well as in the development of legal education in general. The Faculty comprises two academic departments (viz. the Department of Law and the Department of Professional Legal Education). It currently has over 70 teaching members drawn from more than 17 jurisdictions worldwide, and over 1500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty has a rich and vibrant research culture and environment. For further details of the Faculty of Law, please visit the Faculty's website at http://www.law.hku.hk/.

Candidate Profile
The Dean is expected to take a strong leadership role in driving research and developing strategic planning of the Faculty, with a view to further strengthening the position of the Faculty as one of the leading law schools internationally. He/She will also be responsible for enhancing the close ties that exist with other academic and professional organizations outside the University, locally, regionallyand internationally. The Dean should have excellent academic credentials and is expected to provide academic leadership. He/She should be capable of high-level administrative and managerial responsibilities, and have strong competency in managing human and financial resources, budgeting, staff recruitment, personnel issues and alumni networking. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in legal education, research and the future development of the Faculty.
