Job Details

Applications are invited for one Research Fellow position to work towards the goal of optimising next generation of airplane engines for low noise emission.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Noise (Rolls-Royce Noise UTC) at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Low-noise Fan Blade Design Optimisation will be carried out in order to minimise the shock-associated buzz-saw tone noise, with realistic constraints on aerodynamic and mechanical performance. This position will contribute to a major research project to be undertaken jointly with Rolls-Royce. The work will require extensive use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or computational aeroacoustics (CAA).

Applications are sought from candidates who hold a PhD* or equivalent in aerodynamics or aero-acoustics or related disciplines. Previous experience in using CFD is essential. Experience of aircraft noise research and noise prediction methods is desirable. Also, experience in using HYDRA code will be substantially beneficial.

The ISVR, founded in 1963, is a world-leading research institute in acoustics and vibration. It has a long history of industrial collaboration in the field of aviation noise. The Rolls-Royce Noise UTC was founded in 1999 in order to provide a high-level research capability and expertise to the aerospace industry.

The position will be full time with an initial fixed term of 30 months (depending on the earliest availability of the candidate), and are expected to start between September and December 2018. The post is funded as part of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Noise. Owing to the nature of the position, any offer of appointment with the University will be subject to compliance with the Rolls-Royce UTC non-disclosure agreement and recruitment procedures.
