An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Centre for Medical Education, providing professional academic support within our busy MSc programmes.  This Lecturer role provides academic support for the MSc in Genetic & Genomic Counselling, working closely with staff, students and external stakeholders to do so.

The School of Medicine provides a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate education that directly improves health outcomes and healthcare for patients and families. This includes the MSc in Genetic and Genomic Counselling, an innovative, part-time blended learning programme that trains students in the clinical application of advances in human genetics and genomics so that they can provide and critically evaluate genetic and genomic counselling services.
This part time post will be based in the Centre for Medical Education, School of Medicine at Cardiff University's Heath Park Campus. The hours of the post are 7 hours per week. However, at certain times of the year you will be required to work additional hours, for which you will receive additional payment (extra hours to be agreed with the programme director), as teaching will be delivered in intensive face-to-face teaching blocks in September / October (8 days), December (5 days), May (4 days) and June (8 days), with some assessment, administrative, supervisory and personal tutoring activities throughout the year.  The post holder will also contribute to other areas of school activity in the postgraduate taught programmes.

We are looking for outstanding candidates in the area listed above and have one part-time position available on an on-going basis.
Candidates should have a Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or equivalent high quality professional  experience in delivery of Genetic and Genomic counselling services, teaching experience and a passion for student focussed innovative teaching.  Successful candidates will be employed on the Cardiff University Teaching and Scholarship career pathway.
This post is part time (7 hours per week, pattern to be agreed), available from 1 September 2018 and is open-ended.

Salary:
An appointment will be made subject to skills and experience at:
£32,548 - £38,833 per annum, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 6) or
£41,212 - £47,722 per annum, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 7)

Job Description

Main Function

Delivery of teaching, including the development, delivery and evaluation of  teaching within modules/programmes (MET 821 Introduction to Healthcare,  MET822 Introduction to Genetic and Genomic Counselling; MET 824 Research Methods, MET 826 Applied Genetics and Bioinformatics in Clinical Care, MET827: Advanced Genetic & Genomic Counselling; MET828 Placement ) within the post-graduate taught provision within C4ME. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To contribute to genetic counselling supervision of students on placement, and to personal tutoring of PGT students. To pursue excellence in teaching and to inspire others to do the same
 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team

Grade 7: independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules

  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students
  • Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master's students and the co-supervision of PGR's

Grade 7: Acts as a PGR progress review panel member as required

  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust

 

Scholarship

  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in  conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship
  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
  • Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking examination papers and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work

 

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally  to raise awareness of the School's profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer
  • To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role

 

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or equivalent high quality professional  experience in delivery of Genetic and Genomic counselling services
  2. Grade 7: Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  1. Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level - Significant experience at Grade 7
  2. Grade 7: Growing National reputation within academic field
  3. Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within academic subject area
  4. Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes

 

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  1. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
  2. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor
  3. Grade 7: Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met

 

Other

  1. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work
