Operations Manager

The purpose of this position is to support the core business of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) through an operational focus on financial and logistical responsibilities. This will be achieved by providing support to all the faculty's personnel with regard to the effective utilisation of resources, optimising of processes, executing of administrative tasks and relevant managerial information. The position will carry out coordinating and managerial functions that will include interactions with role players from outside the faculty, for example with divisions such as finances, facilities management, academic administration, human resources and information technology. The position will report to the Director: Faculty Management and form part of the Dean's Management Team.

 

Financial responsibilities include:

  • Budget planning and monitoring (on faculty, departmental and deans level);
  • Executing financial transactions, purchasing projects, asset management and management of funds for special projects;
  • Providing support to develop management information and systems regarding strategic and operational information within the Faculty of Economic and 
  • Management Sciences;

 

Logistics and facility-related responsibilities will entail:

  • Planning and monitoring smaller facility projects;
  • Monitoring and addressing maintenance needs and problems;
  • Monitoring buildings' compliance with occupational health and safety requirements; Managing general cleaning contracts;
  • Optimal management of premises and spaces;
  • Handling space requests and timetable management.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate Baccalaureus degree;
  • An undergraduate Baccalaureus or postgraduate degree in the broad managerial or financial fields;
  • Four years' operations management experience at mid-management level at least;
  • Experience in and knowledge of financial, logistical and facilities administration and management;
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and management information skills;
  • A strong value-based work approach and ethics;
  • Proven leadership and organisational skills: working in a team context, making decisions independently, handling diverse tasks simultaneously, the ability to work under severe pressure and maintaining confidentiality;
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in a multilingual environment.

 

Since these are requisites, these skills will be evaluated in a simulated work environment test. Candidates are furthermore requested to indicate in their application how they comply with each of these requirements.

 

Desirable

  • A Bachelor's degree in a financial or accounting direction;
  • Postgraduate qualifications and certificates that support the job content;
  • Knowledge and experience of general management practices in a senior managerial environment;  
  • Knowledge of SU's financial policies and procedures;
  • Experience in the higher education sector;
  • Advanced knowledge of business analysis methodology;
  • Knowledge of and training in SA Occupational Health legislation;
  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of SharePoint and management information systems;
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills in English and Afrikaans.
